The amount of traffic offloaded from smartphones will be 59 percent by 2022, and the amount of traffic offloaded from tablets will be 72 percent. Some have speculated that Wi-Fi offload would be less relevant after 4G networks are in place because of the faster speeds and more abundant bandwidth.
However, so long as data usage caps remain in effect, there will be an incentive for many customers to offload data access to Wi-Fi.
If that remains the case in the 5G era, Wi-Fi offload is going to be higher on 5G networks.
The amount of traffic offloaded from 4G was 57 percent at the end of 2017, and it will be 59 percent by 2022, Cisco estimates. On 5G networks, Wi-Fi offload could be as high as 71 percent, Cisco estimates.
